The Impact of Humidity on Your Water Balance
In Palm Beach County, humidity isn't just a comfort issue for us; it is a chemical challenge for our pools. When the air is saturated with moisture, evaporation rates change, and the water temperature often rises alongside the dew point. Warm water acts as a petri dish for organic growth. As the temperature of your pool water climbs due to the heavy, stagnant air of a Florida summer, your chemicals work twice as hard to maintain sanitation.
High humidity often goes hand-in-hand with frequent, localized rain showers. These brief but intense storms introduce nitrogen and other contaminants from the air into your pool. This combination of heat and organic load can lead to a rapid depletion of your free chlorine levels. Understanding that your pool is a living ecosystem affected by the local atmosphere is the first step in staying ahead of the curve.
Managing pH and Alkalinity Fluctuations
One of the most common issues we see during particularly humid stretches is the steady rise of pH levels. In South Florida, many pools utilize salt chlorine generators or liquid chlorine, both of which can naturally nudge pH upward. When you add high humidity into the mix, the water becomes less stable. Maintaining your Total Alkalinity (TA) between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm) is essential because TA acts as a buffer for your pH.
If your alkalinity is too low, your pH will swing wildly every time we get a typical afternoon thunderstorm. If it is too high, you will struggle to keep the pH down, leading to calcium scaling on your tiles and inside your salt cell. During the most humid months, we recommend testing these levels at least twice a week. Keeping your pH in the 7.4 to 7.6 range ensures that your chlorine remains effective at killing bacteria and preventing algae blooms.
Chlorine Demand and Stabilizer Levels
Humidity and the intense Florida sun create a high-demand environment for sanitizer. Free chlorine is your pool’s primary defense against pathogens. However, without the proper amount of Cyanuric Acid (CYA), also known as stabilizer, the sun will burn through your chlorine in a matter of hours. In South Florida, we generally aim for a CYA level between 30 and 50 ppm for standard pools, and slightly higher for salt systems.
However, there is a delicate balance. If your stabilizer levels get too high—often caused by the over-use of stabilized chlorine pucks—your chlorine becomes "locked" and ineffective. During humid periods, you might notice the water looks a bit dull or hazy even if your test kit shows chlorine is present. This is a sign that the high demand from the heat and humidity is outstripping the chlorine's ability to oxidize contaminants. In these cases, a supplemental shock treatment may be necessary to reset the baseline.
Preventing Algae Before It Starts
Algae loves the South Florida climate. The combination of 90-degree water and 90% humidity provides the perfect breeding ground. By the time you see a green tint on the steps or in the corners, the bloom is already well underway. Prevention is much easier and more cost-effective than a total cleanup.
We suggest keeping a close eye on your phosphate levels during the humid season. Phosphates are essentially food for algae, often introduced by wind-blown debris and heavy rain. Even with perfect chlorine levels, high phosphates can make an algae outbreak inevitable. Using a maintenance dose of algaecide or a phosphate remover can provide that extra layer of protection when the weather is at its most oppressive. Additionally, ensure your filtration system is running long enough—typically 10 to 12 hours during the summer—to properly circulate the chemicals and move the water through your filter.
