In South Florida, your pump and filter are the heart and kidneys of your backyard oasis. If they aren't functioning at peak efficiency, the water quality will degrade rapidly, often turning a clear pool green in less than 48 hours during the peak of summer.

A common mistake homeowners make is assuming that if the water looks clear, the filter must be fine. However, the fine particulate matter common to our area—ranging from salt air residue to microscopic dust—can clog a filter long before the water shows visible signs of trouble. Establishing a consistent schedule for cleaning your pump baskets and filter elements is the most effective way to prevent costly equipment failures and ensure your chemistry remains balanced.

The Weekly Ritual: Pump Baskets and Visual Inspections

In our region, the pump basket requires attention at least once a week. Between the heavy leaf fall from tropical oaks and the debris blown in by afternoon thunderstorms, these baskets fill up quickly. A clogged pump basket restricts water flow, which forces the motor to work harder, generates excess heat, and can eventually lead to a melted basket or a burned-out motor seal. In a climate where the ambient temperature is already in the nineties, your pump does not need the extra heat stress.

During your weekly check, you should also inspect the pump lid O-ring. The South Florida sun and salt air can cause rubber components to dry out and crack prematurely. Applying a silicone-based lubricant to the O-ring every few months will help maintain a tight seal and prevent the pump from drawing in air. If you notice air bubbles coming out of your return jets, the pump lid is often the first place to look for a vacuum leak.

Monthly and Quarterly Filter Deep Cleans

The frequency of your filter cleaning depends largely on the type of filter you own: cartridge, sand, or Diatomaceous Earth (DE). For most modern South Florida residential pools, cartridge filters are the standard. Because our pools run for 8 to 12 hours a day during the summer to combat algae growth, these cartridges trap a massive amount of organic material.

We recommend a thorough cartridge cleaning every four to six weeks, or whenever you notice the pressure gauge on top of the filter tank has risen 8 to 10 PSI above its clean starting pressure. Simply hosing them off isn't always enough; once a quarter, it is wise to soak the cartridges in a filter cleaning solution to break down oils and scale that a standard garden hose cannot remove. If you have a DE filter, backwashing should occur monthly, with a full teardown and grid cleaning every six months to ensure no old, heavy DE is caking at the bottom of the tank.

Adjusting for Tropical Storms and Seasonal Shifts

Our maintenance schedule must remain flexible to account for the South Florida weather cycle. During the rainy season, specifically from June through November, your filter will deal with a significantly higher load of organic contaminants washed in by heavy downpours. It is not uncommon to need an extra filter cleaning immediately following a major storm event or a tropical depression. The rain brings in nitrates and phosphates that feed algae, and your filter is your primary defense in removing these nutrients once they are treated.

Conversely, during the "winter" months when the water temperature drops and the bather load decreases, you might find that your filter stays cleaner for longer. However, do not let your guard down. This is the time when dry season winds blow more dust and fine debris into the water. Even if the pressure gauge remains stable, we suggest sticking to the quarterly deep clean schedule to ensure the equipment is ready for the sudden temperature spikes that can happen even in February.

Maximizing Equipment Longevity

Consistency is the key to longevity. By adhering to a strict cleaning schedule, you reduce the strain on your entire hydraulic system. A clean filter allows for better flow, which means your salt cell (if you have one) can generate chlorine more effectively and your heater can operate without tripping high-limit switches. In the long run, spending a little time on your equipment pad each month saves thousands of dollars in premature replacements.
